We are incredibly excited to announce that Allergan has brought its fat dissolving wonder drug to Australia. From next week, Emetheni will be offering the procedure. Dr Morley and Dr King were chosen as a part of an exclusive group of highly trained Australian cosmetic doctors to be trained in this treatment. It is a doctor-only treatment and is not for use by nurses. Kybella has a different brand name in Australia, we are unable to use this name online due to the rules around “advertising” of drug names in Australia.
So what is it?
This injectable drug is clinically proven to reduce the appearance of sub mental fullness (aka the double chin). To put it simply, it is an injection that dissolves fat. The procedure is an effective, permanent, safe way to reshape the jawline creating a more youthful profile. Treatment is tailored to suit each patient’s facial structure and circumstances. The satisfaction rate is very high after this treatment, with 75% of patients reporting high satisfaction with the appearance of their chin post treatment.
How does it work?
The drug contains deoxycholic acid (DCA). DCA occurs naturally in the body and aids the breakdown and absorption of fat that consume in our diet.
When injected subcutaneously, DCA disrupts the membranes of fat cells leading to irreversible cell breakdown (adipocytolysis). This adipocytolysis causes a mild, local inflammatory tissue response (swelling), which is largely resolved within about 28 days. In additional to fat cell breakdown, fibroblast cells appear post treatment and begin to produce new collagen. This leads to a thickening and tightening of the skin in this area.
Put simply, When injected into the neck fat below the chin this treatment breaks down the fat cells. The body then absorbs and excretes the fat as well as creating collagen to tighten the area.
How many treatments are required?
Patients will typically require 2-4 treatments,4 weeks apart. This is NOT A ONE OFF treatment. Although the results are permanent it takes several treatments to achieve the desired result. The majority of patients will see an improvement after 2-4 treatments.
What are the side effects?
- In the 9 years of clinical study the following side effect were noted as “normal:”
- Pain, bruising swelling, redness and numbness.
- The following side effects were listed as “rare”:
- Bleeding, induration (areas of firmness), itching, paraesthesia, nodules, transient neuropraxia of a facial nerve.
- In long term follow up no adverse effects on skin laxity were noted.
What is the process and how is the treatment performed?
The patient will have an initial consultation with Dr Morley or Dr King where their face and neck will be evaluated and a history taken to make sure that they are a suitable candidate for treatment. They will also be provided a quote at this time. Should you wish to proceed a treatment date will be scheduled at this time. A deposit will be required.
On the day of treatment we recommend taking Panadol for pain management 30 minutes befoe treatment. It is vital you do not take Ibuprofen or any other anti-inflammatories. The patient’s face will be cleaned and a grid will then be drawn onto the skin. The patient will then be injected.
The average dose is 4-6mls (ie 2-3 vials) per treatment. The average number of treatments is 2-4 treatments.
Treatment time is around 30 minutes, with the injections taking 5 minutes.
A cold pack will be applied to the treatment area for 10 minutes after injecting.
“Happy gas” will be offered to patients for pain relief during the procedure if required.
What to do after treatment?
- Do not massage for 72 hours.
- No facials, waxing or tanning for 72 hours
- No pressure should be applied to the area, do not rub.
- Panadol may be taken if there is pain.
- Patients must be aware that results may not be visible for up to 6 weeks, and may not be visible until after the second or third treatment. Also skin continues to tighten after treatment even after swelling subsides.
An appointment should be made for 4-6 weeks after the treatment for review and follow up treatment.
